A HALSTEAD man is set to run to the summit of Mount Snowden in the name of charity.

Jim Spurgeon, 47, of Larks Rise, Halstead, will run 22 miles from Caernarfon Castle on the coast up to the summit of Snowden.

He will finish in Llanberis after a descent including a quarry jump into water and a parkour obstacle zone.

He will be raising money for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society and RETT UK.

Jim is running for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society after his wife, Nicky, was diagnosed with the condition in 2015, and for RETT UK in support of his friend’s daughter who suffers from Rett Syndrome.

Nicky and Jim completed the Vitality 10K London run earlier this year, despite her illness.

He said: “It wont be easy, but it is a bit different, and I do want to challenge myself.

“Last year three of us did Tough Mudder for Help The Heroes, and that is the kind of event I have done a few of in the past, and I have done a few urban assault courses with Rat Race and that is how I found out about this.

“I could sign up and do a marathon, but this is a little different, and I like that.

“I like the thought of testing myself, and if I can raise money at the same time, everyone is a winner.”

Both charities are close to home for Jim.

He added: “My wife was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis last year and I was as ignorant to anyone as what the difference was between normal arthritis.

“It has been a bit of an eye-opener, and something that me and my wife have been through together and learnt to deal with as a couple.

“She is my inspiration, she suffers with aches and pains because of her condition, I have no right to complain my legs are aching when I know how she feels and what she achieves every day.

“The second charity, I had always said to a friend I would help to raise money for RETT.

"Their daughter suffers from it, and it is another one of those illnesses that people do not know a lot about.

"I always promised them I would do something, at the time I had a view other plans, but I said I would do something for RETT one day, and now I am.”

The run will take place on September 3.

So far Jim has raised more than £500.
