A disappointed couple, who booked a break to Mexico six months ago, decided not to go just three hours before their flight.
Lee and Caroline Murphy of Colne Road, Halstead, were due to fly from Gatwick to Cancun on Tuesday to celebrate Caroline’s 30th birthday.
On Monday, the couple called the Foreign Office four times and got in touch with First Choice to check on the swine flu situation.
They were going to be staying at an all inclusive resort about an hour away from Cancun.
Mr Murphy, a media relations manager, said: “It was a bit frantic.
“On Monday, we had calls from friends and family saying we shouldn’t go and we were weighing up the risks.”
The couple decided against their two-week break, but will be able to get their money back.
Mr Murphy, 32, said: “Our suitcases are packed and we haven’t got anywhere to go, but I would rather be at home right now with what’s going on.
“Halstead is a nice place to be at the moment.
“We’re pleased with the decision we have made.
"We wouldn’t have enjoyed the holiday because we would have been worried about catching the flu.”
