A SCHOOL has been described as a “calm and happy place” which children are “proud to attend” in a report from Ofsted.

The education watchdog inspected St Margaret’s Primary School, in Toppesfield, where it was given a good rating in every sector.

The report said: “St Margaret’s is a calm and happy place. Pupils enjoy coming to school.

“They feel safe and say that the staff know them very well.

“Pupils are proud to be part of this small school.”

It also said staff are “ambitious”, with pupils enjoying a “varied curriculum”, including learning music, computing and PE.

Inspectors described the curriculum as “carefully sequenced” which “meets pupils needs”.

The report said: “The curriculum is ambitious. Leaders have high expectations for what all pupils should learn.

“Teachers have secure subject knowledge and know how to teach different subjects effectively.

“They usually plan activities that match and deepen pupils’ understanding.”

It continued: “Leaders have made reading a priority, beginning in the early years, to ensure that pupils can access the full curriculum. Pupils enjoy reading.

“There is a focus on teaching phonics consistently and ensuring that pupils become fluent readers.”

Inspectors also noted that pupils with additional needs are supported well.

They said: “Leaders have a robust system for identifying pupils’ needs early. They ensure that pupils get the help and support they need to do well in their learning.

“Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) are supported well to access the full curriculum.

“Pupils with SEND make strong gains in their knowledge.”
