A PAIR of pals have completed a 57.5 mile trek to raise money for a cancer charity.

Carol Atkins and Kaye Hunt, both from Halstead, walked from Lyme Regis to Lulworth to raise money for Bloodwise.

The two women completed the trek across Dorset in memory of Carol’s late sister Julie Brewer, who tragically lost her life to leukaemia at the age of just 56 in February this year.

Carol said: “It was actually my sister who suggested walking the coastal path, so we did it in her memory in a way.

“The first day was tough because we had to go up the Golden Cap, the highest point in the South East of England, but unfortunately the fog robbed us of our view.

“It was very satisfying, there were many times when I thought my sister would have been looking down laughing at us.

“It was lovely, she loved that part of the country so to stand there and think she has walked these paths and seen these views, which made it very special, it was quite fitting.

Overall the walk was a huge success, apart from when some slight confusion resulted in the emergency services being called.

When the pair took different routes, Kaye called the police when she could not contact Carol resulting in a number of police cars and a helicopter being sent out on a hunt for Carol as she merrily strolled along a separate path.

Carol said: "The policeman were very understanding and said Kaye did the right thing but I was terribly embarrassed.

"People keep saying to me I was lost, but I was not lost, I knew exactly where I was, it just happened that no-one else knew where I was.

"There are two butterflies that you can only see in Portland so I was having a wonderful time, strolling along without a care in the world trying to catch a glimpse of these butterflies, it just happened that Kaye was very concerned about my whereabouts."

The ladies raised £600 for Bloodwise, a charity with the sole purpose of eliminating the 137 types of blood cancer.

The pair have previously raised over £2,000 for various charities on other expeditions including a bike ride in America.
